On the stereo: “Counting Down the Hours,” Ted Leo + Pharmacists

Okay, here it goes:

I think John McCain is losing his marbles and that he can’t be trusted. I think that his hotheaded, impulsive mentality makes him an incredibly dangerous candidate for the office of President.

There, I said it. He has given to our country selflessly in uniform, risked his life for our freedoms and committed himself to a life of public service. And it’s time for him to fucking retire. Seriously. Like, I’ll totally buy the mai tais or piƱa coladas or whatever the fuck you want to drink, Senator. You name it, really; it’s on me.

Can I go further? I would like to, as I’ve just found out that McCain will likely be leaking his pick for VP right after tonight’s rally at the Mile High Stadium in Denver, where Barack Obama will officially accept my party’s nomination of him for the office of President. That’s MY party you’re gonna crash, you rat.

Now, there’s a long history of mudslinging and dirty pool in the race to the White House, and we’ve already seen a fair bit of it. But historically, each party’s convention week is off limits, to a degree: It’s diplomacy, a show of respect, to allow your opponent the spotlight for four days. Certainly there are ads and press releases from the rival team, but there’s no precedent for a headline-stealer like a VP announcement. Let’s refer, briefly, to a statement issued by McCain campaign manager Rick Davis on March 11, 2008:

“John McCain is now the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party. It is critical, as we prepare to face off with whomever the Democrats select as their nominee, that we all follow John’s lead and run a respectful campaign focused on the issues and values that are important to the American people.

Throughout the primary election we saw John McCain reject the type of politics that degrade our civics, and this will not change as he prepares to run head-to-head against the Democratic nominee.”

Really? So that makes McCain a total dick, too, in my estimation. Even if we give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume that it’s a classy move for him to hijack the narrative of the convention in Denver by announcing the winner of the veepstakes, how can we explain all the bullshit ads his campaign has been running? How does the Paris Hilton ad (the least offensive of the recent ones, in my opinion) constitute a “respectful campaign focused on the issues and values that are important to the American people”? It does not.

And those are just the official ads. John McCain is a guy who is tacitly endorsing (i.e. definitely not condemning) the American Issues Project, a 501c(4), by allowing them to run wild with an ad suggesting Obama is a terrorist by proxy, because he’s shaken the hand of Bill Ayers a few times. This is the same kind of smear that destroyed McCain’s own primary run in 2000 (a Karl Rove affiliated 527 ran an ad suggesting that John and Cindy’s adopted Bangladeshi daughter was, in fact, a love child, in case you don’t remember), and John Kerry’s run in 2004 (the infamous “swift boat” ads).

John Sidney McCain, I do not question your undying love for our country and your service to it. It goes without saying that our soldiers, all our brothers and sisters in uniform at home and overseas, are the glue holding this nation together. But please, stop being such a twit, and be true to your word. If you’d just provide some honesty, and be respectful of your opponent and show some dignity, I wouldn’t feel the need to be such an asshole about all this. But for the moment I don’t feel like I have much of a choice, because I love my country too. And you honestly scare me to death.

Following a poor performance at a concert in Columbus, Ohio, singer Neil Diamond felt it necessary to say sorry to his fans. But instead of just issuing an apology (which he did) and promising to perform better his next time through Ohio (which he said he will), Diamond will instead refund the tickets of every single person who attended the August 25th concert at the Value City Arena. To break it down numerically, that’s 11,000 tickets that the Solitary Man will refund.

Diamond is in the thick of a U.S. tour, and during the last few shows, the singer had been suffering from acute laryngitis. He still made it to the Columbus stage, but fans were soon greeted onstage by a hoarse sounding singer. “Dear Fans in Columbus,” Diamond said in a statement, “I haven’t let you down before, and I won’t let you down now. Until you hear from me again remember, You are the sun. I am the moon. You are the words. I am the tune. Forgive me. I love you. Neil.” The all-out refund shocked even the concert’s promoter, with Scott Stienecker saying “I’ve sat through Vince Neil falling-down drunk before. I’ve sat through Bob Dylan not even acknowledging that there was a crowd,” and neither of those artists refunded the fans. In an effort to avoid future refunds, and due to his ongoing throat problems, Diamond has cancelled two concerts this week.

  • Rapper T.I. set a Hot 100 chart record for largest jump to the top of the charts as his new single “Whatever You Want,” from his upcoming Paper Trail, leapt from 71 to 1 in the span of one week.

SYDNEY, Australia - The immigration department said Wednesday it was conducting a character assessment of Snoop Dogg, including his criminal history, as Australia considers whether to grant the rapper a visa for a concert tour later this year.

A department spokesman said reports the visa had already been granted were false.

He said the rapper, whose birth name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., applied for a visa in July and the department carried out a preliminary assessment. Snoop Dogg and fellow hip-hop star Ice Cube plan an Australian concert tour in October.

"The department has now decided to do a full assessment of the character of Mr. Broadus, and the department has begun this assessment," the spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity as required by the department.

He said Snoop Dogg had been notified of the further assessment.

The spokesman said the rapper has visited Australia three times: in 1998, 2006 and 2007, without incident, though he did overstay his visa by two days on the last visit.

Snoop Dogg withdrew his application for a visa to Australia last year when he failed to pass the character requirements after pleading no contest to gun and drug charges in the United States.

LOS ANGELES - Nicollette Sheridan and Michael Bolton have ended their engagement.

The split was amicable, said Nicole Perna, a publicist for the pair.

The 44-year-old actress and 55-year-old singer have been engaged since March 2006. They first started dating in 1992 and spent five years together, Perna said, then rekindled their romance in 2005.

Sheridan plays Edie Britt on ABC's "Desperate Housewives." Bolton won Grammy awards in 1989 and 1991 for male pop vocal performance.

The couple's split was first reported by People.com.

DETROIT (Billboard) - It's been six years since Jackson Browne released an album of new material, but the veteran singer-songwriter hardly feels that he has made himself scarce in the interim.

"I made three albums since my last studio album," Browne -- who releases "Time the Conqueror" September 23 on his own Inside Recordings label -- told Billboard.com, referring to a pair of "Acoustic Live" sets and a collaboration with R&B group Fred Martin & the Levite Camp on 2006's "Some Bridges."

"For me it's pretty steady, continuous work. And I'm kind of playing continuously, even though it's not necessarily a national tour or a publicity campaign. I'm just playing all the time."

Nevertheless, Browne acknowledged, "I missed my band a lot ... and getting to make an album where you're rehearsed and you have production and you're ready to play these songs is a real pleasure for me."

Browne has been making "Time the Conqueror" for about three years. He road-tested some of the 10 songs, including the title track and "Just Say Yeah," during his acoustic tour, and others were inspired by sound-check jams. Browne started writing "The Drums of War," one of several politically minded tracks on the album, during the early months of the Iraq invasion.

"Time the Conqueror" is Browne's first full-fledged studio album on Inside after 30-plus years with Elektra and Asylum, a partnership that wrapped with 2002's "The Naked Ride Home" and the 2004 compilation "The Very Best of Jackson Browne."

"I'm not sure what it would be like to be the other way anymore because of the way in which the music business has changed and sort of been denigrated," he said. "I think it's perfectly good for music that the record companies are sort of in decline and the ones that are doing the more interesting things are small independent labels that are run by music lovers, people who really do it for passionate, personal, musically ideological reasons."

Browne begins his tour to promote "Time the Conqueror" on September 15 in Washington, D.C., continuing into 2009 with concert dates around the world. At the same time, he'll be monitoring his lawsuit against Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, for using Browne's "Running on Empty" without authorization in campaign ads.

"It's pretty open and shut," Browne said. "They can't use your music without your permission, and it's pretty hard to imagine a senator or anybody in a political campaign not knowing that. The law is so well pronounced. They use your song without asking and you have to make them pay for it. But I'm not sure if it'll be resolved soon or quickly."

The 'Spider-Man’ actress is reportedly romancing MGMT frontman Andrew Vanwyngarden – whose former girlfriend, Fabiola Gatti, has enjoyed an on/off relationship with Kirsten’s ex, Razorlight singer Johnny Borrell – after meeting at a US concert last month.

The pair have been seen together at several European festivals.

A source said: 'Kirsten met Andrew at a show in New York in July and set her sights on him then.

'She was backstage with him at Lowlands in Holland and Pukkelpop in Belgium earlier this month. It’s all a bit strange as he has been linked with Johnny’s ex, Fabiola.'

Insiders are already claiming there are a great deal of similarities between Johnny and Andrew, who was recently seen partying in Camden, London.

The source added to Britain’s The Sun newspaper: "Andrew made quite an impression with the girls in the Camden crowd, so they’ve got a few things in common there too.

'Kirsten met Johnny on Razorlight’s 2007 US tour before turning up at that year’s SXSW festival on the back of his motorbike.
Paul McCartney had Starbucks, the Eagles and AC/DC have Wal-Mart and now country (and chicken) icon Kenny Rogers has linked up with the Cracker Barrel. Starting today, if you’re fortunate enough to reside near one of those Old Country Stores, you can pick up a copy of Rogers’ 50 Years along with their restaurant’s famed “homemade chicken n’ dumplins.” The twelve-song set includes three brand new songs as well as nine of the Gambler’s greatest hits. “I want to go on record saying that I think that what Cracker Barrel is doing with its exclusive music program is a great opportunity for me and for other artists.” said Rogers. “I’m thrilled that they gave me the opportunity to create this album exclusively for their guests. In this business, where the Internet has become so important, to reach individual people shopping at Cracker Barrel is such a great gift.” Cracker Barrel isn’t new to the exclusive release arena, having already sold albums by Alison Krauss, Amy Grant and Charlie Daniels.

Packed with more live music than perhaps any other political gathering in history, the Democratic National Convention unofficially opened Sunday night with Barack Obama supporter Sheryl Crow changing the words of “A Change Would Do You Good” to “A Change Would Do Us Good” at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver. Crow, Sugarland and a morose Dave Matthews, grieving after last week’s death of his band’s saxophone player LeRoi Moore, performed acoustic sets for a private “Green Sunday” convention kick-off amid environmental speeches by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. Meanwhile, at the Fillmore Auditorium near downtown, a huge, raucous coalition of New Orleans bluesmen and funkateers, including the re-formed Meters and pianist Allen Toussaint, partied until 2 a.m., pleading for assistance to the damaged city’s levees, marshes and swamps. Oscar-winning pianist Randy Newman sat in for two songs, including his eerily Katrina-predicting “Louisiana 1927,” complete with solos from trumpeter Terence Blanchard.
The 2008 Summer Olympics finally concluded last night in Beijing, bidding goodbye to Michael Phelps, the Redeem Team and Usain Bolt, but not before handing off the baton to London, England, who will host the 2012 Olympics. Acting as delegates for the U.K. were Leona Lewis and Jimmy Page, who came together to perform Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” There was some outcry about the song’s lyrics prior to the performance, but Lewis tactfully changed the song’s words from “every inch of my love” to “every bit of my love” while singing from a three-story high pillar. Check out the performance at the NBC site, even though it sounds like Lewis is singing from the opposite end of a tunnel.
